Building a deck can look like a major project, but good planning and the right sequence make it much more manageable. Whether this is your first deck or an upgrade to an existing outdoor space, the basics are usually the same.
1. Plan and measure
Start by measuring the deck area. A deck calculator gives you a quick baseline for the decking quantity before you move further.
2. Prepare the base
Excavate where needed, add gravel or other suitable base material, and make sure the support system will be stable and able to drain well.
3. Build the framing
Put together a solid framing layout before the deck boards go down. Check spans, support points, and overall alignment.
4. Install the deck boards
Fasten the boards with the right spacing and use outdoor-rated deck screws or another appropriate fastening system.
5. Finish and maintain
Stain, oil, seal, or otherwise protect the deck if the material calls for it, then stay on top of cleaning and maintenance over time.
